Vids: Immortals-Review

Immortals is the story of Theseus, (Henry Cavill) a mortal chosen by Zeus(Luke Evans) to stop the bloody rampage of King Hyperion(played to perfection by Mickey Rourke) who is seeking the legendary Epirus Bow. This bow was forged by Ares, the God of War and is a weapon of unimaginable power. Zeus has chosen Theseus because the Gods cannot interfere in affairs of man unless the Titans are unleashed.

On his quest to stop the mad king, Theseus is joined by Stavros (Stephen Dorff) the thief and the oracle Phaedra (Freida Pinto) who helped him escape from Hyperion. Theseus must stop Hyperion from freeing the Titans which would be unleashing hell on Earth. The trio must get to Mount Tartaros where the Titans are imprisoned to meet up with the forces who oppose Hyperion.

Directed by Tarsem Singh (The Cell, Mirror, Mirror), Immortals has a look similar to another film about Greeks at war, 300. This stylized look really does work for sword and sandal epics with slow motion gore and unrealistic sprays of blood. The fight scenes are well choreographed and though somewhat over the top they are great to watch. Two of the best scenes are the battle in the tunnel during the castle siege and the fight between the Gods and the Titans which is bloody awesome.

Action packed, Immortals is an enjoyable romp but by no means is it highbrow entertainment. You do not have to be a student of Greek mythology to enjoy this movie as a matter of fact it might be better if you know little of mythology. I do not mean that in a bad way; I enjoyed Immortals very much. Immortals has stunning special effects that look great in Blu-ray even on a small screen. Pick up a copy today.
