{"id":10225,"date":"2014-03-06T11:07:27","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T16:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/geekstronomy.com\/?p=10225"},"modified":"2014-03-06T11:07:27","modified_gmt":"2014-03-06T16:07:27","slug":"hard-copy-harlan-ellisons-acclaimed-star-trek-script-comes-to-comics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geekstronomy.com\/?p=10225","title":{"rendered":"Hard Copy: HARLAN ELLISON\u2019S ACCLAIMED STAR TREK SCRIPT COMES TO COMICS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Star Trek: The Original Series<\/em> episode \u201cCity on the Edge of Forever\u201d is re<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/5792cac24346d164eb0cf6ad2\/images\/ST_CityForever01_cvrA.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"379\" align=\"right\" \/>garded by many (including a TV Guide poll of the \u201c100 Best TV Episodes of All Time\u201d) as the greatest <em>Star Trek<\/em> episode of all time, but there\u2019s much more to the story than fans saw on TV. <strong>Harlan Ellison<\/strong>\u2019s original teleplay for \u201cCity on the Edge of Forever\u201d was modified before the episode was filmed, but now, at long last, fans will be able to enjoy his original teleplay in the form of an all-new miniseries coming from IDW in June: <em>Star Trek: Harlan Ellison\u2019s City on the Edge of Forever: The Original Teleplay<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Ellison\u2019s original teleplay won both the prestigious Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation as well as the Writer\u2019s Guild of America\u2019s Award for Most Outstanding Teleplay.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, legions of fans have speculated about the episode\u2019s history, but few people have read the original teleplay, which is very different from the televised version. This comic-book miniseries, produced under the guidance of Harlan Ellison himself, now offers fans everywhere the opportunity to see a classic <em>Star Trek<\/em> episode the way no one has seen it before.<\/p>\n<p>Adapting the teleplay for the comics series are writers <strong>Scott Tipton<\/strong> and <strong>David Tipton<\/strong>, no strangers to IDW\u2019s <em>Star Trek<\/em> comic universe; interior art will be painted by <strong>J.K. Woodward<\/strong>, coming off the well-received <em>Star Trek: TNG\/Doctor Who<\/em> maxi-series written by the Tipton brothers. Each issue of the series will feature a special cover by artist <strong>Juan Ortiz<\/strong>, whose artistic interpretations of every episode of <em>Star Trek: The Original Series<\/em> were recently published in an oversize hardcover collection, <em>Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz<\/em>. Variant covers will be provided by movie poster artist\/<em>Star Trek: Khan<\/em> cover artist <strong>Paul Shipper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresenting Harlan Ellison\u2019s brilliant original script for \u2018City on the Edge\u2026\u2019 has been a goal of ours since IDW first began publishing <em>Star Trek<\/em> comics in 2007,\u201d said series editor and IDW Chief Creative Officer\/Editor-in-Chief <strong>Chris Ryall<\/strong>. \u201cThe episode justifies its position atop \u2018best <em>Star Trek<\/em> episodes\u2019 lists but even it ain\u2019t nuthin\u2019 compared to what Ellison did in his original teleplay. This is truly going to be a <em>Star Trek<\/em> adventure unlike any other, even to fans who have that beloved episode memorized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harlan Ellison<\/strong> says: \u201cIt was a superlative joy of my long life to have worked with Leonard Nimoy, who became my friend, and many others at <em>Star Trek<\/em>; and an equally heart-happy joy to be working with J.K. and the Tipton Bros. and Chris Ryall on this long-awaited visual of my (humbly, I say it) <em>brilliant<\/em> original \u2018City\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Star Trek<\/em>\u2019s \u201cCity on the Edge of Forever\u201d originally aired on April 6, 1967, as the penultimate episode of <em>Star Trek<\/em>\u2019s first season. The episode is, at its most basic, a poignant love story as well as a breathtaking trip through space and time, from the future all the way through 1930s America, as Kirk and Spock race to apprehend a renegade criminal and restore the order of the universe. IGN awarded it the number-one spot in their list of the Top 10 Classic <em>Star Trek<\/em> Episodes. Further, <em>TV Guide<\/em> named the episode one of its 100 Most Memorable Moments in TV History.
