Lakeshore Records recently released \"\"<\/a>Duster\u2014Original Series Soundtrack digitally August 8 featuring music by Oscar\u00ae and Grammy\u00ae-nominated, and five-time Emmy\u00ae award winning composer Laura Karpman (American Fiction). Karpman merges propulsive dramatic orchestration with \u201870s funk creating a vintage-sounding backdrop to the nostalgic thriller series. Creator J.J. Abrams created and performed the series\u2019 main theme. Duster starring Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson is streaming now on HBO Max.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Created by Emmy\u00ae winner J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, Duster follows Jim Ellis (Holloway) \u2013 a gutsy getaway driver for a powerful Arizona smuggling syndicate on the cusp of becoming an empire. Amid the political, social, and cultural upheaval of 1970s America, Jim navigates life like he drives \u2013 fast and furious \u2013 always leaving the cops in the dust\u2026 until Agent Nina Hayes (Hilson) arrives fresh from the FBI Academy. Nina is on a mission to take down the syndicate and prove her worth in a job where too many want her to fail. As Nina\u2019s investigative fearlessness collides with Jim\u2019s increasingly high-risk escapades, these opposites build a tentative frenemy-ship \u2013 all while outmaneuvering colorful enemies, pulling off outrageous heists, and surviving hair-raising shoot-outs.<\/p>\n

    Oscar\u00ae and Grammy\u00ae-nominated, five-time Emmy\u00ae award-winning composer LAURA KARPMAN creates powerful, imaginative scores that push the boundaries of storytelling. Her bold, incandescent works span film, television, theater, interactive media and live performance, reflecting an audaciously creative, prodigious fresh spirit. Karpman collaborates with some of the most renowned filmmakers of our time, including J.J.     Karpman wrote the original music for the upcoming 2025 Max television series \u201cDuster\u201d created by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, starring Rachel Hilson and Josh Holloway. Other upcoming projects include a musical based on Dorothy Arzner\u2019s MGM film, \u201cDance Girl Dance.\u201d Concert music premieres include the world premiere performance of \u201cBalls,\u201d an opera chronicling Billie Jean King\u2019s epic 1973 \u201cBattle of the Sexes\u201d’ tennis match, with words by New York Times writer Gail Collins, and a commissioned work for the Juilliard School. Karpman was proud to have her theme from \u201cThe Marvels\u201d performed at the closing night of the BBC Proms.<\/p>\n

    Karpman\u2019s scores span HBO\u2019s acclaimed hit \u201cLovecraft Country,\u201d the music for the recently Oscar\u00ae-nominated documentary short film \u201cThe Only Girl in the Orchestra,\u201d the Oscar\u00ae-nominated documentary short film \u201cWalk Run Cha-Cha\u201d and the docuseries \u201cWhy We Hate.\u201d Other recent work includes \u201cMiss Virginia,\u201d \u201cSet It Up,\u201d \u201cParis Can Wait,\u201d \u201cThe Cotton Club Encore,\u201d \u201cStep,\u201d \u201cBlack Nativity,\u201d \u201cUnderground,\u201d \u201cLA\u2019s Finest\u201d and the Peabody Award-winning series \u201cCraft in America.\u201d Karpman has recently received two additional Emmy\u00ae nominations for \u201cMs. Marvel,\u201d as well as \u201cRock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed,\u201d and won an HMMA award for \u201cThe Marvels.\u201d For her \u201cAmerican Fiction\u201d score, to date she has received Academy Award\u00ae, GRAMMY, SCL, NAACP Image Award, and HMMA nominations, as well as inclusion in the 2024 BAFTA Longlist.<\/p>\n

    Other awards include a 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from \u201cShe Rocks,\u201d a Critics\u2019 Choice Award for her song \u201cJump\u201d (from the film \u201cStep\u201d), co-written with frequent collaborators Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson, sung by Cynthia Erivo. Her animated work includes \u201cSitara,\u201d directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, executive produced by Darla Anderson and Gloria Steinem, and her Annie-nominated score for \u201cMonkey\u2019s Tale\u201d and three seasons of \u201cWhat If\u2026?\u201d for Marvel Television. Her celebrated scores for interactive media and blockbuster video games include \u201cGuardians of Middle Earth,\u201d \u201cEverquest 2,\u201d \u201cUntold Legends: Dark Kingdom,\u201d \u201cKung Fu Panda 2,\u201d \u201cProject Spark\u201d and \u201cKinect Disneyland Adventures.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Across concert halls, Karpman is well known for her Grammy\u00ae Award-winning album, \u201cAsk Your Mama,\u201d a multimedia opera based on the iconic cycle of poems by renowned author Langston Hughes. For this Carnegie Hall commission, Karpman collaborated with The Roots, soprano Jessye Norman, performer De\u2019Andre Aziza, and jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon. Other notable works include \u201cAll American,\u201d commissioned and performed by The Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl; \u201cBrass Ceiling,\u201d commissioned and recorded by the U.S. Army Band; \u201cAnd Still We Dream,\u201d commissioned by Lyric Opera of Kansas City, honoring 100 years of suffrage; \u201cWilde Tales,\u201d commissioned by Glimmerglass Festival, and a pandemic opera for Opera Theatre of St. Louis with libretto by Taura Stinson & Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum.<\/p>\n

    Karpman is a fierce champion for DEI in Hollywood. After founding the Alliance for Women Film Composers, she was elected the first female Governor in the Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. During her two consecutive three-year terms, she implemented sweeping change, facilitating the admission of dozens of underrepresented voices, co-founded the Academy Women\u2019s Initiative, co-chaired the LGBTQ+ Affinity Group, helped to create the Code of Conduct, and updated the bylaws with more inclusive, representative language. Her leadership in creating opportunity and advocating for inclusion is unparalleled.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Karpman serves as a mentor and is on the advisory board for the Chanel\/Tribeca Through Her Lens Program. She received a doctorate from The Juilliard School, where she studied with 20th-century icon Milton Babbitt.<\/p>\n

    She lives and works in Los Angeles with her wife, composer Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum, their son and two dogs.<\/p>\n
