Broadway Records is set to release \"\"<\/a>digitally today, May 15 the remastered original cast recording of War Horse with music by Adrian Sutton and with original songs by John Tams. The album\u2019s release is in tandem with the global phenomenon returning to its original home nearly two decades after its debut and following a recent acclaimed tour of the UK and Ireland. This Tony Award-winning production based on Michael Morpurgo\u2019s beloved novel adapted by Nick Stafford and originally directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, has become the most successful play in the history of the National Theatre, winning more than 25 major awards, and has been seen by over 8.8 million people worldwide. It returns to captivate a whole new generation from 18 May until 30 July 2026.<\/p>\n

Says Theatre and Tonic regarding Sutton\u2019s score (2024 UK touring production): Adrian Sutton\u2019s music score is wonderful yet subtle at times. It creates this undercurrent of emotion slowly building within the dramatic scenes. You can hear and feel the tension during battlefield scenes, and yet also calm and relaxed in others. About War Horse<\/p>\n

War Horse tells the remarkable story of a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey, set against the backdrop of the First World War.  It is a timeless story of love, courage and friendship, brought to life by astonishing life-sized horses from Handspring Puppet Company and a stirring musical score.<\/p>\n

At the outbreak of the First World War, young Albert\u2019s beloved horse Joey is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. Too young to enlist, Albert refuses to forget him, embarking on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of wartime France \u2013 determined to bring Joey home.<\/p>\n

War Horse\u202freceived its world premiere on 9 October 2007 at the National Theatre, where it played for two seasons before opening at the New London Theatre in March 2009.\u202f\u202fSince then,\u202fWar Horse\u202fhas been seen in over\u202f100\u202fcities in 15 countries, including productions on Broadway, in Toronto and Berlin, with touring productions in the UK and Ireland, North America, the Netherlands and Belgium.  Michael Morpurgo\u2019s global best-selling novel has now sold over\u202f2\u202fmillion copies worldwide and in\u202f44\u202fdifferent languages.<\/p>\n

The original production of War Horse was co-directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, with set and costume design by Rae Smith and puppet design and fabrication by Adrian Kohler for Handspring Puppet Company.  Original lighting design was by Paule Constable, with movement and horse choreography by Toby Sedgwick and animation and projection design by 59 Studio.  Original Music was by Adrian Sutton with John Tams as songmaker and sound design was by Christopher Shutt.<\/p>\n

    ABOUT ADRIAN SUTTON<\/p>\n

    Best-known for his score for the worldwide theatre hit War Horse, Adrian was equally at home in the concert hall, with a whole evening of his orchestral works, including the world premiere of his Violin Concerto, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in June 2023 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London\u2019s Southbank Centre.<\/p>\n

    He received commissions from many areas of the classical music world including the BBC Proms and worked with the UK’s top orchestras including the BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and BBC Concert Orchestras, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Opera North.<\/p>\n

    His scores for Britain’s National Theatre in the past 20 years need no introduction… Coram Boy, War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time for which he received an Olivier Award and Angels in America for which he received a Tony nomination, have all transferred to Broadway and achieved international fame.<\/p>\n

    His accessible musical style is rooted in various influences including 20th-century English and American music, and is focused strongly on lyricism, rich harmony and strong melody. He was a strong advocate of live music being performed as much for the enjoyment of the performers as the audience.<\/p>\n

    ABOUT JOHN TAMS<\/p>\n

    John Tams\u2019 work has spanned seven decades in every performance medium.<\/p>\n

    Theatre includes work at the Old Vic, the RSC, Shakespeare\u2019s Globe, Sheffield Crucible, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Birmingham Rep, Joint Stock, Chichester and 7:84. At the National Theatre, he has worked as actor and musical director\/composer on over 30 productions including War Horse (original member of the creative team; also as production executive on tour), The Mysteries, Larkrise, Candleford and Glengarry Glen Ross.TV includes as Daniel Hagman in Sharpe (also as script associate). Films include War Horse.<\/p>\n

    Radio includes Radio Ballads (as executive music director; Gold at the Sony Radio Academy Awards) and War Horse (as director).<\/p>\n

    Other projects include a performance of \u2018Only Remembered\u2019 before the late Queen Elizabeth II at The Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, which was globally watched by over 70 million viewers; and his adaptation of War Horse, which toured as a \u2018concert\u2019 reading with Sir Michael Morpurgo.<\/p>\n

    John Tams is a recognised authority on vernacular music \u2013 a seven-times winner at the BBC Folk Awards. He has made over 60 albums and continues to tour festival and concert stages, including his own never-ending tour entitled…notwithstanding. He holds Honorary Doctorates from Sheffield Hallam and Derby universities.<\/p>\n
