Lakeshore Records announces the \"\"<\/a>release today of Great Photo, Lovely Life with an original score composed by Dan Deacon.  The score shape shifts to match the varied themes of the documentary series\u2014from sober, atmospheric soundscapes to electronic themes that move with a thrilling trajectory. The original series streams on HBO Max.<\/p>\n

Photojournalist Amanda Mustard returns home to Pennsylvania to investigate the sexual abuse crimes committed by her grandfather.<\/p>\n

Amanda Mustard notes: “Dan was always my first choice as composer – his ability to cross musical genres with such innovation matched my desire for this score to reach its utmost creative potential. When I asked if I could play the marimba on the score, he wrote me into my own themes. I had shelved my musicianship to pursue photojournalism and filmmaking, so dusting it off felt like a beautiful reintegration – adding a deeply meaningful layer to the personal nature of this story and process. It takes a rare, wonderful person to balance the weight of heavy subject matter with the joy and playfulness of the creative process, and Dan was the perfect collaborator. We’ve always believed music shouldn’t be an afterthought – we wanted this score to stand on its own, beyond the film, and are thrilled for its release.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deacon adds: \u201cWorking with Amanda Mustard as she processed and unfolded this story into her film was a unique collaborative experience. The film explores her family and her investigation; she was also the director and a key musician performing marimba on the score. The intersection of those roles drove my musical choices and brought the score to places I do not think it would have ventured otherwise.<\/p>\n

There are also many sampled diegetic sounds from the locations in this score. For example, loud leaf blowers were running in the background of a particularly intense scene. I sampled the leaf blowers and tuned our strings and synths to match their microtonal harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n

ABOUT DAN DEACON<\/p>\n

Baltimore-based Dan Deacon is a composer, experimental artist and performer renowned for his five studio albums of innovative electronic music, his live performances in both contemporary and classical settings, and his extensive body of work in film and television scores. His rapidly growing list of prominent film credits including Little Brother (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film), last year\u2019s Task Original Series Soundtrack and PBS\u2019s Art & Science Collide, for which he just won the Los Angeles Emmy Award for Music Composition, Time and Water is the latest in Deacon\u2019s rapidly growing list of prominent film and television credits.<\/p>\n

Deacon has premiered compositions at Carnegie Hall, the Barbican Centre, and Lincoln Center, and collaborated with artists and institutions including Kronos Quartet, S\u014d Percussion, The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic, and Justin Peck with the New York City Ballet. Deacon\u2019s most recent studio album is Mystic Familiar (2020, Domino Recording Company).<\/p>\n
