For the film, Halpern has crafted a heightened, romantic score that traces Haru&#8217;s emotional inner life through flutes, layered harps, chamber strings and samba-driven themes drawn from her ballroom world. Directed by Josef Kubota Wladyka, Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Directing Award, and arrives in theaters today.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Of the score, composer Nathan Halpern says, &#8220;The score for Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! expresses Haru&#8217;s emotional inner life, a heightened world of longing, romance, and magic. Every note is directly inspired by Rinko Kikuchi&#8217;s moving and iconic performance. The musical language draws on classically romantic, mid-century gestures that are heightened and abstracted through performance and production. Flutes articulate Haru&#8217;s emotional voice, layered harps trace her sensuous longings, and a chamber string ensemble provides a classic yet intimate sweep. Whistled melodies rooted in nature reflect feelings of magic and loss, while samba-driven themes grounded in Haru&#8217;s ballroom world speak to her heart as a dancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>About Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!<\/p>\n<p>Haru and Luis love competing in Tokyo&#8217;s ballroom dance scene, but after tragedy strikes, Haru withdraws into isolation. When friends coax her back to the studio, she develops an infatuation with the new instructor. His recent work includes the Sundance award-winning Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!, which also played at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Take Me Home, both of which premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Halpern has scored such acclaimed features as Chlo\u00e9 Zhao&#8217;s The Rider, Emily the Criminal, Watcher, and Swallow, the latter earning a Hollywood Music in Media Award nomination for Best Original Score (Horror). A recurring presence at Sundance, where he has scored 15 films across narrative and documentary sections, his credits also include the Oscar-nominated Minding the Gap and The Martha Mitchell Effect, Grand Jury Prize winners One Child Nation and Rich Hill, and Marina Abramovi\u0107: The Artist Is Present.
