Equipment: Review of Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang from DC Direct The New 52

The line between good and evil has become blurred over the years. SuperOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAheroes like Superman live by a code. Their sense of morality does not allow them to stray off of the straight and narrow. Heroes like Batman do lean more toward the darkness, but bottom line; he does what he does for justice.  Sometimes however the right “hero” for the job is a villain. That is when the call goes out to The Suicide Squad. The group is made up of incarcerated super-villains including Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang and works for the government under the supervision of Amanda Waller.

I like the premise of having villains play the part of the hero even if it only for selfish reasons.  I also enjoy action figures. So naturally I was drawn in by the figure line from DC Collectibles depicting the Squad. I am fortunate enough to be able to review two amazing figures. One is maniac with a strange voice and a weird getup and the other is Harley Quinn.  Seriously, the second figure is Captain Boomerang.

Let’s start with the Harley figure. I must admit that Harley Quinn is one of my favorite characters. Harley was first introduced on Batman: The Animated Series and it was love at first sight for me. Dr. Harleen Quinzel is crazy pretty, crazily loyal and she dresses in some crazy clothes…that is a whole lot of crazy on her side.

This 6 ¾-inch figure is a great looking sculpt by Jack Mathews, he even managed to give Harley a crazy look in her eyes.  Her costume is red and blue and it too looks incredible. This costume is a far leap from her first appearance where she wore a red, white and black unitard.  The outfit from “The New 52” is a bit more risqué with skin tight shorts, mixed matched tights and a laced up corset. I am sure that the fan boys and fan girls find this outfit very appealing.

The figure is poseable but some poses cannot be achieved unless you hold it in place. Harley Quinn has approximately 16 points of articulation which are:

  • Knees
  • Thigh
  • Hips
  • Forearms
  • Biceps
  • Shoulders
  • Neck
  • Pig-tails. That’s right she has poseable hair.

Because of her design it is impossible seat her on your shelf since she can’t sit. She also lacks any kind of waist movement thus limiting how we can pose her. It would have been cool to pose her on one knee with guns in both hands.  Seriously though, not being able to do a couple of poses does not distract from how nice this figure looks. There is a peg hole in the bottom of her right foot so she can pose on a stand (not included). Also if you are very gentle you can pop her head off of the ball joint and remove her rubber cape. The cape is very short and a bit silly. If you spin the cape around it looks like a lobster bib.

The New 52 Harley Quinn comes with 2 hand guns which fit into the holsters molded to her thighs. Harley also comes with her trusty giant hammer so she can smash anyone who gets in her way. Knowing Harley she would also use it as a nutcracker during the holidays.

The next member of the Suicide Squad we have for review is Captain Boomerang.  Captain Boomerang gets his name from his weapon of choice, the boomerang. Sculpted by Phil Ramirez, he stands approximately 6 ¾ tall and has multiple points of articulation.

Captain Boomerang is dressed in a bluish/black outfit with scarf and knit cap. He also has a bandolier strapped across his chest carrying his weapon of choice. The figure has approximately 16 points of articulation. These include:

  • Ankles
  • Calves
  • Hips
  • Waist
  • Forearms
  • Elbows
  • Shoulders
  • Neck

Captain Boomerang is a bit more poseable than the Harley Quinn figure. You can have Captain Boomerang sitting even though he has a long coat as part of his costume. The coat is made out of a very pliable rubber and does not hinder the pose. The figure also has a spot on his foot that can be used to attach him to a stand (not included).

One thing that I believe takes away from the figure is the fact that the boomerangs in his bandolier are just for show and cannot be removed. He does come with one large boomerang that he can hold but no other accessories. I must admit that Captain Boomerang has never been one of my favorite villains but I do like his design in The New 52.

I really do enjoy the figures coming from DC Direct.  The Suicide Squad Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang retail for 24.95 and are available from DC Direct.
