When JFK announced in 1962 that the United States would have a man walking on the moon before the end of the decade space travel was just science fiction. At the beginning of the 1960’s the space program was in its infancy and was expected to grow up very quickly. In 1969 we proved that nothing is impossible when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. This was a monumental achievement and what makes it more extraordinary was the fact that computer science was also in its infancy. In fact, the average smart phone is approximately 32,600 times faster than the computers used by NASA in the 1960s. That is pretty amazing.
There are many modern conveniences we have now that weren’t even dreamed of in the 1960s. For example, in 1969 photos weren’t stored digitally; they could only be stored on film. This film was stored in bulky canisters that took up room on the ship and had to be returned to Earth for processing. (I take for granted that I have a 64 gig flash card in one of my cameras).
The space program has changed but our fascination with those first explorers has not wavered. When I was a child I used to pretend I was an astronaut and had the toys to help with the fantasy. Playing astronaut as a kid is one thing but as a grown-up walking down the street in a space helmet could cause some issues and a few odd looks. Thankfully, when it comes to space-themed accessories our friends at The Coop have you covered. They have taken something commonplace on those early Apollo missions and repurposed it; taking the look of those old film canisters and turning it into a space-age lunch kit.
The NASA Apollo Moon Landing Film Canister Lunch Tins are made to mimic the look of the old film canisters while being a real lunch kit. Similar to a bento box this stackable lunch kit is made of food safe stainless steel with NASA graphics on the outside. The 3 tins are capable of holding approximately 1 cup of food per bowl and 3 cups of food (about 700ml) all together with the canister lid serving double duty as a plate. Be warned, the stackable lunch kit is not intended to carry liquids and is not airtight.
The NASA Apollo Moon Landing Film Canister Lunch Tins stand approximately 10.5 inches tall (including frame), 8 inches (without frame) and are 6.6 inches wide. This unique lunch kit is a perfect gift for the space fan in your life especially with the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Suggested retail for the NASA Apollo Moon Landing Film Canister Lunch Tins from The Coop is $30.00. This lunch kit does have NASA’s seal of approval which is cool.
