Vids: The 355 Starring Jessica Chastain and Penélope Cruz Review

I have always been a big fan of the spy genre. James Bond and Napoleon Solo were my role models; the fast cars, the great clothes and of course, the gadgets. Times changed and spy movies became more “realistic”, cutting back on the fantasy high tech gadgetry.  As much as I liked the laser in the watch and exploding fountain pens, I do find myself wanting to watch something a bit more grounded in reality. I think that is why I enjoyed the 355 so much.

Though the film touches on many of the tropes we associate with spy movies, there are a couple of times that I said out loud, “I never saw that coming.” The 355 is filled with plenty of chases, fight scenes and gun play; ticking

off the boxes of what is needed in an action film. Speaking of the fight scenes I thought they were well choreographed and executed. In my opinion bad fight scenes can take away from a movie.

The 355 might not be the best spy movie I have ever seen but it accomplishes its mission, it entertains. I enjoyed this film and as long as you aren’t looking for one-liner catchphrases and violence for the sake of violence, you may enjoy it as well. I am hoping that there might be a sequel.

SYNOPSIS:

When a top-secret weapon falls into mercenary hands, wild-card CIA agent Mason “Mace” Brown (Jessica Chastain) joins forces with rival German agent Marie (Diane Kruger), former MI6 ally and cutting-edge computer specialist Khadijah (Lupita Nyong’o), and skilled Colombian psychologist Graciela (Penélope Cruz) on a lethal mission to retrieve it. The unlikely team must also stay one step ahead of a mysterious woman, Lin Mi Sheng (Bingbing Fan), who is tracking their every move as the action rockets across the globe.
