Soundwaves: ONE LIFE Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Music by Volker Bertelmann

Lakeshore Records has released One Life—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with music by Oscar and BAFTA winning composer Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet On The Western Front), digitally today, January 5. Led by Bertelmann’s distinctive piano, the poignant orchestral score enhances the haunting drama of the film based on the life of Nicholas Winton. The See-Saw Films production directed by James Hawes and starring Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter is playing in UK theaters now.

ONE LIFE tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, along with Trevor Chadwick and Doreen Warriner of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis in the months leading up to World War II, Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?

Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show, ‘That’s Life!’, surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children – now adults – that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades

Notes Bertelmann: “To work on a film like One Life is difficult because it needs emotions and warmth while at the same time it should not be too cloying. I tried to find themes that were reflecting that warmth and that I could express with different instrumentation.

Collaborating with the director James Hawes was a huge pleasure because he gave me a lot of freedom in the creative process of the composition. For me it was clear that it should be a classic score with strings and piano—the recordings with the London Contemporary Orchestra went very well.”
