Lakeshore Records is set to release
The Hunting Wives: Season 1—Music From The Original TV Series digitally today, July 25, with an original score by Jeff Danna (Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities). Danna’s music is immediately ornate and enchanting with strings and keys yet also provides menacing tones that reflect the dark drama within the series. Based on the novel by May Cobb, The Hunting Wives is streaming now on Netflix.
The Hunting Wives tells the story of Sophie O’Neil and her family’s move from the East Coast to deep-red East Texas, where she succumbs to socialite Margo Banks’ irresistible charms – and finds her life consumed by obsession, seduction, and murder.
Notes Danna: “How to do guitar music for Texas in a way that avoids cliches? Such was the topic of my first discussion with Rebecca Cutter for her incisive crime drama ‘The Hunting Wives.’ As a guitar player with a large collection of rare and folky guitars from all over the world, I perused my stash until I found an instrument I had not yet used in a film score, a Croatian Prim – a small, pointy sounding axe with a haunting sound somewhere between The Near East and Austin. I paired that with its larger cousin the basprim, and a telecaster to ground them both and started down the road of writing. As I went along I broke a piano, broke many antique guitar strings and wine glasses, struck a cello with pieces of wood and metal and generally had a great time with Rebecca Cutter’s dark and twisty yarn.”

ABOUT JEFF DANNA
Jeff Danna is an award-winning Canadian film composer. Born in Burlington, Ontario, to a musical family active in local theatre and church choir, Danna was a reluctant young piano student but found solace in an electric guitar left behind at his home by a friend. Unknowingly following in the path of three generations of Winnipeg mandolin players, progress came quickly. He began playing professionally at the age of 15 until a hand injury brought his performance career to a halt at 22. He has composed or co-composed scores for a wide range of films and television, including The Boondock Saints (1999), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Silent Hill (2006), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), The Good Dinosaur (2015), Storks (2016), The Breadwinner (2017), The Addams Family (2019), Onward (2020), Guillermo del Toro’s Tales of Arcadia (2020), Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon (2022), Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (2022), and Julia (2022). His older brother, composer Mychael Danna, is a frequent collaborator, and the two have received Emmy nominations for their work on Camelot (2011), Tyrant (2014-2016), and Alias Grace (2017). Additionally, Danna has been nominated for six Annie Awards, won five BMI Film & TV Awards, a Gemini Award, a Genie Award, three nominations and one Hollywood Music in Media Award, and 17 SOCAN Awards.
