Soundwaves: Normal Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Music by Harry Gregson-Williams and Ryder McNair

Lakeshore Records announced the release of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Normal on April 17, with a soaring orchestral original score by composers Harry Gregson-Williams and Ryder McNair (both on Gladiator II). The Magnolia Pictures film directed by Ben Wheatley and starring Bob Odenkirk is in theaters now.

For Sheriff Ulysses (Odenkirk), his provisional posting to the quaint Midwestern American town of Normal was meant to be a welcome respite from both his marital woes and recent moral injuries in the line of duty. But when a botched bank robbery interrupts the municipality’s tranquil pace, a dark secret is inadvertently exposed, and Ulysses soon discovers that the town is anything but its namesake.

Notes about the score from Harry Gregson-Williams and Ryder McNair:

Scoring Normal, we knew the music would need to pull off the same trick as the film: hint at what’s coming without giving anything away too soon.

In the first act, the score leaned into Americana — fingerpicked guitars, fiddle — while a quiet tension simmered beneath, an unease that echoed both Ulysses’ past and the town itself.

When the bank robbery hit, that world detonated. The folk textures gave way to full-ensemble action scoring — strings, brass, electric guitars, synths, driving percussion — but threads of the original material stayed woven into the mix.

That became our guiding principle: the pre-reveal score told you who Ulysses was. The post-reveal score showed you what he was capable of.
