Hollywood Records in conjunction 
with National Geographic Documentary Films announce the release today of Time and Water–Original Motion Picture Soundtrack featuring music by electronic musician and composer Dan Deacon. Deacon provides a buoyant and transcendent score that reflects the stunning and ever evolving Icelandic glaciers and the poignant stories of the people profiled in the documentary film directed by Sara Dosa. Time and Water is streaming now on Disney+ and Hulu.
Notes Deacon: “I work on a lot of non-fictional films on heavy subjects, but this film was especially emotional for me. The combination of personal and existential loss was a lot to wrap my head around. Director Sara Dosa, with her unique sensitivities and visions, really opened up parts of my musical mind I didn’t know existed. Collaborating with Sara, music editor Chester Gwazda, and the brilliant editing team helped us find a musical vocabulary to accompany the vast range of the story’s core elements: a love letter, a time capsule, the stages of grief and loss, the sci-fi present, mythological fantasy, the massive natural wonders, and Andri’s own personality and quirks. Finding the music and composing this film were just as much a dynamic, emotive ride for me.”
Adds Sara Dosa: “To me, it really feels like Dan brings his whole heart to the work. His score doesn’t just accompany the film, it expands and deepens it. He has a way of taking an emotion and making it feel vast, magical, and visceral all at once, which felt so aligned with a story about love, time, and something as massive and at once fragile as glaciers. His artistry holds both immensity and the intimacy simultaneously, a tonal balance we were searching for as we explored themes of time travel, ecological grief, and cultural transmission and personal memory.
“One of the things that struck me most in the process was how detailed and thoughtful he was about the film’s thematic and narrative layers. He listened closely not just to the story, but to the glaciers and Iceland’s cultural heritage, as well. He engaged with its rhythms and textures, and with the Icelandic rímur (epic rhyming folksongs) woven through the film, incorporating those melodies into his compositions in a way that added extraordinary richness and dimensionality.”

Facing the death of his country’s glaciers and the loss of his beloved grandparents, Icelandic writer Andri Snær Magnason turns his archives into a time capsule to hold what is slipping away — family, memory, time, and water.

ABOUT DAN DEACON
Baltimore-based Dan Deacon is a composer, experimental artist and performer renowned for his five studio albums of innovative electronic music, his live performances in both contemporary and classical settings, and his extensive body of work in film and television scores. His rapidly growing list of prominent film credits including Little Brother (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film), last year’s Task Original Series Soundtrack and PBS’s Art & Science Collide, for which he just won the Los Angeles Emmy Award for Music Composition, Time and Water is the latest in Deacon’s rapidly growing list of prominent film and television credits.
