Thor: The Dark World is the eagerly anticipated sequel to the 2011 blockbuster, Thor. This time Thor (Chris Hemsworth) must battle Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and his dark elves as they try to destroy the Nine Realms. Once again, Thor is joined by the beautiful Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and her friends. With the very existence of reality threatened, both the inhabitants of Asgard and the people of Earth must fight to defeat the dark forces.
Diamond Select Toys have now produced a Jane Foster figure as part of their Marvel Select line. The figure stands approximately 7 inches tall and has 16 points of articulation. The Jane Foster figure is dressed in the blue gown she wore during her stay on Asgard. This figure also comes with an alternate head which depicts “Dark Jane” (if you have seen the movie you’ll know). Jane also comes with half of a rock formation for recreating scenes from the movie. The other half of the rock formation is included with the Diamond Select Thor figure.
While beautiful, this figure is not without some flaws. As with other Diamond Select releases this figure has multiple points of articulation, but the stiff rubber dress makes it impossible to take advantage of her poseability. The dress is split in the back, but this is not enough to allow for movement. The arms and the upper body have no such problems. I also had hard time getting the figure to stand. Damn high heels! The head is on a ball-joint and swapping out one for the other is quick and easy.
Speaking of the heads, the likeness of Natalie Portman is just a bit off. The artwork on the box is so much closer to the actress; it’s too bad the figure is not as exact. The figure is still beautiful and you can tell it is supposed to be Portman. So far the best likeness that I have seen has been the Jeremy Renner’s likeness on the Hawkeye figure, proving it can be done.
Overall I would give the Jane Foster figure a 5 out of 10 rating. Looks wise she is great and if you prop her up this figure would look great on a shelf. I know that making a figure poseable in dress is a difficult task and there needs to be sacrifices. Maybe at a later date Diamond Select could release a Jane Foster in her street clothes making it possible to actually play with the figure.
Jane Foster retails for around $20 bucks and is available at your local comic shop or the Disney Store. Get yours today.
