I have been a big fan of the Marvel Select figures from Diamond Select Toys for years. My favorite is still the Hawkeye figure from The Avengers (2014). It could be because that was my first Marvel Select or maybe it is because Hawkeye is the coolest Avenger; I can’t decide. Diamond has produced some pretty incredible looking figures. One of those cool figures is the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill, AKA Star-Lord. WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR INFINITY WAR!
I am sure most of you have already seen Avengers: Infinity War so you know Star-Lord plays a pivotal role in the final battle with that one glove wearing, Michael Jackson wannabe, Thanos. Star-Lord came up with a plan to take down the mad Titan only to lose his temper when he found out his love, Gamorra was dead. Shortly after Quill’s outburst came the finger snap heard around the universe; the one causing Quill and half of all sentient life forms to be turned to dust.
If you want to recreate this pivotal scene you will need a Star-Lord figure and you are in luck because Diamond Select produces a pretty bad ass Marvel Select Star-Lord. Produced for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this figure is approximately 7 inches tall and comes with a poseable Rocket Raccoon that is to scale to the Star-Lord. Both of these figures were sculpted by Gentle Giant so you know they look great.
The Star-Lord figure comes with 1 of his signature blasters and is dressed as he was in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He is wearing his short leather jacket and t-shirt with alien language. He has multiple points of articulation which is perfect for dynamic posing. Star-Lord’s points of articulation are:
- Head
- Neck
- Shoulders
- Elbows
- Chest
- Waist
- Hips
- Thighs
- Knees (double)
- Ankles
- Feet
The Rocket Raccoon figure is dressed in blue coveralls and is approximately 3.5 inches tall. Rocket comes with 2 blasters similar to what he used in his escape from the Ravagers ship. Rocket’s points of articulation are:
- Head
- Shoulders
- Elbows
- Wrists
- Waist
- Hips
- Knees
- Calves
- Ankles
- Tail
You have to admit that he has a ton of poseability packed into his little rodent body. I mentioned that Rocket’s tail was poseable but it is best used in balancing the figure. His joints are very delicate so take care when getting him into whatever pose of destruction you wish.
I really like both of these figures. Recommended for collectors 8 and above I think these two are better off in the hands of a slightly older collector because of the delicate nature of Rocket’s joints. They would be a great addition to any collection.
My only complaints about the figures would be that Star-Lord does not come with an unmasked head to switch out. Also Star-Lord also only comes with 1 of his signature blasters. I think he really does require both if for no other reason than because it looks cool. Strangely the back of the package states, “…based on his appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and includes masked and unmasked head and twin element guns…” Even if they didn’t give him both guns the figure would have benefited from the extra head. Regardless of the missing/omitted parts these are still great figures.
The Marvel Select Star-Lord figure retails for approximately $24.99 and can be found at your favorite comic shop or on the Diamond website here.
