Hard Copy: Review of The Art of Star Wars Visions from Dark Horse Books

Star Wars: Visions is an animated anthology series that airs on Disney Plus that offers a different view on the Star Wars universe. This anime styled series tells stories peripheral to the events that occurred in the movies. I really like that the writers were able to create stories that weren’t about anyone named Skywalker or anyone Skywalker adjacent.

Aside from being original stories, the art in the Star Wars: Visions series is different from the previous animated Star Wars adventures; these shorts were drawn in anime styles. I believe that the choice of style sets the tone for the entire tale. While it is all anime there are different styles and Visions uses several throughout the series. I am partial to the artwork from episode 3 “The Twins” because it is reminiscent of the 1980’s style anime. It reminded me of a show called Star Blazers, which was something I loved as a kid.

Star Wars: Visions was a nine part series of shorts that aired on Disney Plus beginning in September of 2021. Each story in this anthology centered on a character not yet depicted in any of the live action Star Wars movies or shows. I found it quite refreshing that Disney opted to look at other aspects of the galaxy instead on falling back on something familiar or safe.

If you are like me and thoroughly enjoyed the look of the Star Wars: Visions series, Dark Horse Books has the art book for you. The Art of Star Wars: Visions with text by Zack Davisson is available now from Dark Horse. This amazing art volume from Dark Horse Books is filled with art and concept art and illustrations showing how these concepts went from someone’s imagination on to the screen.

The Art of Star Wars: Visions is divided into 9 chapters with each chapter devoted to a singular episode. Each chapter is filled with character, weapon, setting and ship designs. The art in this book is so beautiful it should have been a portfolio so you could frame the pages you like; there are so many pages that I would frame.

I think that this book isn’t just perfect for fans of Star Wars it would be a perfect gift for the anime fan in your life. The art is really breathtakingly beautiful. This may be my favorite art book of the last couple of years.

The Art of Star Wars: Visions is published by Dark Horse Books and is 192 pages of text, artwork and total geekiness. The Art of Star Wars: Visions from Dark Horse Books is available in 2 editions. There is the standard edition which retails for $49.99 (which we are reviewing) and the limited edition which retails for $99.99. The Limited Edition version comes in slipcase with a folio triptych lithograph depicting images from each episode. Remember that Star Wars: Visions season 2 premieres on Disney Plus on May 4th which happens to be Star Wars Day. May the Force be with you!
