Hallmark has been producing Star Trek Keepsake Ornaments since 1991 when they released the original U.S.S. Enterprise from the television series. At the time, in order to get the lights to work you needed to plug your ornament into your light string. Nowadays the Keepsake ornaments take watch batteries. I prefer the batteries; if you don’t need an outside power source, your ships can be on display year-round.
This year’s Star Trek Keepsake Ornament is the U.S.S. Enterprise from the Second Season episode, “Who Mourns for Adonis”. In this episode, as the Enterprise approaches the M-Class planet, Pollux IV, a giant, green, glowing hand rises from the planet’s surface. The Enterprise’s attempts to flee prove unsuccessful and they find themselves in the grasp of some alien power. Kirk and company are then contacted by the “owner” of the hand who claims to be the Greek God, Apollo.
This is not the only time Star Trek has alluded to a green hand. The green glowing hand is also referenced in Star Trek: Beyond (set in the Kelvin timeline) when discussing the disappearance of the U.S.S. Franklin. When discussing the Franklin and its captain Kirk asks Scotty how the ship wound up so far out in space. Scotty responds, “There’s a lot of theories, sir…Surrendered to the Romulans…captured by a giant space hand…” I do like how the newer Star Trek paid homage to the original series.
So this year’s main Star Trek Hallmark Keepsake Ornament is called The Hand of Apollo. This ornament depicts the scene from “Who Mourns for Adonis” where Apollo’s hand holds the U.S.S. Enterprise in orbit of Pollux IV. The ornament measures (from the Hallmark website) approx.: 3.88 x 1.96 x 5.57 (these are more exact than I measured out in the video) and is light weight.
The Hand of Apollo Keepsake Ornament is not one of the “Magic” ornaments that have lights and sounds, it is pretty basic. There is a way to achieve the glowing effect. The hand section is translucent and you can plug one of the tree lights into the grommet on the end to achieve a “glowing” effect. You don’t really need to attach the light but it enhances the experience.
The Star Trek Hand of Apollo Keepsake Ornament is available now at your local Hallmark Gold Crown store and retails for $29.99. It was sculpted by Jack Angell. As with most Star Trek ornaments, it would be best to pick it up when you see it; once they sell out they are gone for good.
This ornament is a must for the completest out there and would make a perfect addition to your Star Trek themed tree. Get yours while you can…Happy Holidays and Live Long and Prosper!
