Hallmark is more than just a greeting 
card company. They produce a variety of products including holiday ornaments. You can collect ornaments for Halloween, Easter and of course, Christmas. Hallmark’s line of Keepsake Ornaments really does have something for everyone. Personally, I am a fan of the pop culture themed ornaments. I wait anxiously for the Dream Book and the announcement of what is being released each year. Past releases may have seemed a bit obscure to some but to a science fiction fan, the obscure ones are a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect to see ornaments like the Spinner from Blade Runner, or the Cylon Centurion from Battlestar Galactica but Hallmark made them happen. This year the ornament that I was surprised to see was the N.S.E.A Protector from the film, Galaxy Quest.
Galaxy Quest has to be the best Star Trek parody ever made. It is a very funny movie with a stellar cast including Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver and Sam Rockwell. I loved it and I know the movie has a great fan following, but I never expected to see the Protector as a Hallmark Keepsake Ornament.
The N.S.E.A. Protector Keepsake Ornament from Hallmark is made from plastic and measures (according the Hallmark website) in inches: 4.45 x 0.94 x 5.17. This is a static ornament and has no moving parts, lights or sounds. I don’t believe that putting lights or sound in the Protector would have really added anything to the finished product, it is perfect The sculptor did an incredible job making this small ornament highly detailed.
The N.S.E.A. Protector comes in plastic free packaging which can also be used for storage. Frankly I believe that this is one of those Christmas ornaments that can be displayed year ‘round. Hallmark even makes display hooks for that very reason. The N.S.E.A. Protector retails for $24.99 USD and can be purchased at your local Hallmark Gold Crown store. This ornament is scheduled to be released on October 12th when the next wave of Keepsake Ornaments is released.
