The Noble Collection has been around
since 1991; this means they have been making top of the line prop replicas for 34 years. Known for producing products from multiple franchises such as Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, DC properties, Harry Potter and Star Trek; from the smallest bookmark to the largest wand, everything they produce is quality. I own quite a few of their products and I have always been impressed.
Speaking of being impressed, the first time I saw the Noble Collection’s Star Trek Tridimensional Chess Set it was love at first sight. This 1:1 scale prop replica is amazing. Making its first appearance in the Star Trek Original Series episode Charlie X, the 3-D chess set is one of the most recognizable props from Star Trek behind only the phaser and communicator. The Star Trek 3-Dimensional Chess Set from The Noble Collection is so accurate that it was used (with slight modifications) in an episode of Star Trek Strange New Worlds.
Standing over a foot tall, the Tridimensional Chess Set comes with 32 die cast pieces (each piece is approximately 1 ½ inches tall) and has seven boards on five levels. The pieces resemble the original pieces from the 1960’s. Interestingly, when the game was created, it was just a set dressing prop but over the years rules have been established to make tridimensional chess a real game. I will be honest, I can play chess but I don’t know if I could manage this one. The only reason I even know any moves from the game is because of the Original Series episode, Whom Gods Destroy where the phrase, “Queen to Queen’s level three,” was used as a pass code. There is a rule book included with the set so I guess I should give it a try. I am sure I could learn the game, but I will never be as good as Mr. Spock.
There have been other Tridimensional Chess sets over the years, such as the one from the Franklin Mint in the 1990’s. That set was smaller according to the website, Memory Alpha, at approximately half the scale of what was used on the Original Series. That set was nice, but I really like having a full-size playable set.
The Star Trek Tridimensional Chess Set from the Noble Collection stands approximately 13inches tall and retails for $145 USD. Even if you aren’t a chess player it looks good sitting on a shelf. Don’t forget to pay a visit to The Noble Collection website and get a look at some of their other outstanding products as well.
