Soundwaves: Black Rabbit Soundtrack From The Netflix Limited Series Music By Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans

Acclaimed composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, known for their genre-defying scores on Ozark and The Gift, return with a visceral new original soundtrack for Netflix’s upcoming psychological thriller Black Rabbit, premiering September 18. Set against the pulsating backdrop of New York City’s nocturnal underworld, Bensi and Jurriaans channel their deep roots in the city’s music scene to craft a score that is as volatile, unfiltered, and emotionally charged as the story itself. Blending distorted horns, and raw, improvised textures, their score pushes sonic boundaries to mirror the descent of brothers Vince (Jason Bateman) and Jake (Jude Law) into the chaos of ambition, identity, and survival. The result is a haunting and hypnotic musical experience that doesn’t just underscore the narrative, it pulses through its veins.

The composers share, “For the Black Rabbit score we built a palette of destroyed horns, garbage can percussion, mangled rock bands, found sounds and blown out analog synthesizers. The music is a propulsive, syncopated, chaotic march to a story that spirals down with increasing inertia. Along the way there are faint glimmers of emotion but always weighted with an undercurrent of dread.”

ABOUT BLACK RABBIT

Set against the backdrop of New York City’s high-pressure nightlife scene, Black Rabbit centers around two brothers who learn just how far family, and the pursuit of success, can push them to the edge. Jake Friedkin (Jude Law) is the charismatic owner of Black Rabbit, a restaurant and VIP lounge, poised to become the hottest spot in New York. But when his brother, Vince (Jason Bateman), returns to the business unexpectedly, trouble soon follows; opening the door to old traumas and new dangers that threaten to bring down everything they’ve built. Black Rabbit is a propulsive thrill ride and character examination about the way an unbreakable bond between two brothers can shatter their world and everything in its orbit.

The series is created and executive produced by Zach Baylin and Kate Susman for Youngblood Pictures. Executive producers include Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan for Aggregate Films; Jude Law and Ben Jackson for Riff Raff Entertainment; Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Justin Levy for Range; Andrew Hinderaker, Zac Frognowski, David Bernon and Erica Kay.

ABOUT DANNY BENSI AND SAUNDER JURRIAANS

Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans are two award-winning film composers. They have been writing and playing music together for over twenty years.

Before both moving to New York in 2001, Danny was raised studying the cello in Europe, while Saunder grew up playing guitar in Seattle’s thriving music scene. As a duo, they are known for bold unpredictability, uniqueness, and their ability to interpret a wide range of genres. Drawing from an array of modern classical styles and beyond, their compositions are filled with atypical orchestrations, sensuous melodies, and visceral soundscapes.

One of their first films, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE (Dir. Sean Durkin) garnered much attention for its sparse and suspenseful score. Soon after, their sinister score for ENEMY (Dir. Denis Villeneuve) won “Best Musical Score” at the Canadian Screen Awards. In 2015, they scored Joel Edgerton’s acclaimed suspense thriller THE GIFT and later his 2018 drama BOY ERASED. Other films include SPEAK NO EVIL, THE WHITE TIGER, THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME, THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE, WINDFALL, and GOD’S CREATURES. The duo has also written remarkable scores for documentaries LA 92, AMANDA KNOX, TINA, THE WOLFPACK, BECOMING COUSTEAU and many more.

In TV, Danny and Saunder have scored 4 seasons of Jason Bateman’s  OZARK, for which they were nominated for an Emmy in 2020. Other television work includes THE OA, THE OUTSIDER, OUTER RANGE, TOKYO VICE, THE STAIRCASE, TULSA KING, and PRESUMED INNOCENT. More recently they scored Dennis Lehane’s SMOKE, and Jason Bateman’s upcoming series BLACK RABBIT.

Danny and Saunder currently live and work in Los Angeles.
