Everyone has something that they are 
interested in; sports, motorcycles, construction equipment, Barbie, Disney…the list could go on for a while. What is surprising to me is that Hallmark probably has a Keepsake Ornament for your interest, no matter what it is. I was pleasantly surprised when Hallmark started to make Star Trek ornaments in the 1990’s, but what really shocked me is when Hallmark produced ornaments for the Alien franchise. It wasn’t just a one and done, there have been several xenomorphs, the power loader and now this year Hallmark has released the dropship from James Cameron’s Aliens.
Aliens was the sequel to the 1979 sci-fi horror film, Alien. If you are not familiar with the movie, Aliens is about a squad of Colonial Marines (USCM) who are sent to the planet Acheron to find out why Earth has lost contact with the colony located on that planet. This action-packed film introduced sci-fi fans to some very impressive military equipment. Syd Mead and Ron Cobb designed everything to look practical, as if it could exist in the real world. One of the coolest of these designs was the UD-4L Dropship. This design was very reminiscent of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) which was used extensively during the Vietnam conflict. Even the full designation of the dropship, the UD-4L “Cheyenne” is similar to that of the Huey. Surprisingly, the Dropship was designed by the movie’s director, James Cameron.
The Hallmark Keepsake Ornament of the UD-4L packs as much attitude as it did on the big screen. The ornament was designed with its landing gear retracted and her missile bays opened and ready for attack. The missile bays are fixed and cannot be folded. This ornament is a perfect reproduction of the movie vehicle. Hallmark never ceases to impress me with the quality and the detail of their ornaments. The true beauty of the modern Keepsake Ornament is the fact that they can be displayed all year long. Even the “magic” ornaments that light up or have sound effects don’t need a tree or a light string, they all have batteries.
