The Summer Blockbuster “Green Lantern” is released today 10/14 with a Special Extended Cut. Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan human test pilot chosen by an alien power to protect the universe. Based on the DC Comic character that made his first appearance in All American Comics #16 in 1940, the Green Lantern is a member of an intergalactic peace keeping force who protects the galaxy from evil.
A Green Lantern is chosen by the ring upon the death of its original owner. The ring is given to Jordan by a Lantern called Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison) who was mortally wounded by a malevolent creature that feeds on fear called Parallax. Hal Jordan must prove to Sinestro (Mark Strong) a fellow lantern that he is a worthy ring bearer as well as keep the Earth safe from Parallax.
I was not very familiar with the character of the Green Lantern aside from knowing that there was a ring and a lantern involved in his power. This movie did an excellent job in introducing novices into the mythos of the character making him accessible for the masses. Director Martin Campbell has some experience dealing with larger than life characters since he has directed 2 James Bonds movies, Goldeneye and Casino Royale. Campbell did an excellent job making the fantastic settings and strange creatures believable.
Green Lantern is not just an enjoyable Superhero movie it is an action filled adventure that despite some minor flaws is worth owning, especially in the multi-disc packs being offered from Warner Home Entertainment.
