Equipement: Mega Bloks Spider-Man Bridge Showdown Playset Review

The Spider-Man reboot was one of the hottest movies of the summer. Andrew Garfield did a great job bringing the arachnid superhero with a nerdy alter-ego to life. Aside from a new love interest The Amazing Spider-Man also gave us The Lizard for the first time in live action. Rhys Ifans’ portrayal of the disabled scientist in search of a way to regrow limbs had just the right amount of psychosis.

The second best thing about blockbuster movies are the movie tie-ins. When you have a bankable character such as Spider-Man you know that there will be tons of merchandise to go with the movie. Aside from the line of action figures currently available, Mega Bloks has come out with a line of building block playsets. These playsets are designed to help kids not just recreate scenes from the film but to use their imagination building things they dream up.

One of the building sets from Mega Bloks is the Amazing Spider-Man Bridge Showdown Building Set. This set is supposed to depict the scene from the movie where our hero meets the Lizard for the first time. In the movie Spidey and the Lizard fight on the Brooklyn Bridge. The fight ends with Spider-Man rushing off to save an Oscorp executive. The strange thing about this playset is that Spidey has a jeep and the Lizard has an Exo-suit, neither of which appeared in the movie. Even though these vehicles are not in continuity with the film, this is still a kick ass playset.

The Bridge Showdown Building Set comes with detailed instructions for recreating the vehicles on the box. The set comes with 250 pieces which are not only enough to build the two suggested vehicles but that is also enough blocks to let your imagination roam free. When you build the two vehicles there are some extra pieces left over for your own personal modifications. When building from the instructions your finished product does differ slightly from the picture on the box.

Each vehicle has multiple moving parts. The jeep can roll freely and comes with a rubber spider web that can be used for cover on the jeep or to capture bad guys. The Lizard’s Exo-suit has even more features. The Exo-suit has a poseable claw arm, a firing rocket launcher (doesn’t fire live rockets) and a poseable machine gun arm. The “legs” of the Exo-suit are made of a florescent green rubber and have some limited poseablity.

The Amazing Spider-Man Bridge Showdown comes with 2 figures that despite their size surprisingly poseable. Each figure come with 12 points of articulation actually the Lizard gets one more since his tail can be posed as well. The tail does have a little bit of trouble staying on but that isn’t too much of an issue. I really liked the spider web that you can clip into Spider-Man’s hand to give him the appearance of “web slinging.”

The Mega Bloks Amazing Spider-Man Bridge Showdown retails for $19.99 and is worth every penny. You or a child you know can get hours of enjoyment from this playset. The Amazing Spider-Man playset is for children 6 and up.
