Equipment: Diamond Select Klingon Disruptor Regular Edition

Earlier this year we reviewed the Diamond Select, AIMG_5041bction Figure Xpress Exclusive Klingon Disruptor and suffice to say we thought it was great. Now we have gotten our hands on the general release Klingon Disruptor from Diamond Select and we are still impressed.

The Klingons are a culture steeped in tradition, shrouded in mystery and fueled by combat. The evolution of Klingons has been quite drastic. The Klingons were once a race of conniving, smooth cranium warmongers has become a species that prides itself on honor and duty. What hasn’t changed is their love of combat and weapons. When not trying to kill an opponent with one of a variety of edged weapon they go to the old stand-by, a Klingon Disruptor. This weapon is larger than its Federation counterpart and like the Klingons themselves it is very intimidating looking.

Now Diamond Select Toys has produced the Klingon Disruptor in 1:1 scale perfect for completing your look when you dress up in that Klingon armor you have in the closet. This is, I believe, the only time that someone has a produced a role playing toy for one of many alien races on Star Trek that is full sized. Back in the 1990’s Playmates held the license for producing Star Trek toys and they did a fair job at making role play toys. One of the major complaints about these weapons was that they just didn’t measure up. The first Klingon Disruptor was put out by Playmates to coincide with the release of Star Trek: Generations back in 1994. The scale was perfect for the tiny hands of target audience but adult collectors were left wanting, that is until today.

This Klingon Disruptor marks the first time that Diamond Select Toys had produced a piece of alien tech. Diamond Select opted to go for modern versions of this weapon instead of its 1960’s counterpart. The Klingon Disruptor is a pretty big gun and although it is well built I would be afraid that if I dropped it it could break. The front barrel part of the gun is just 3 tubes that connect to the beam emitter chamber which gives it that fragile appearance. I am not saying that it is fragile I just don’t want to drop it and have it break.

The Diamond Select Klingon Disruptor is the exact match for the actual prop from various incarnations of Star Trek. This is the common sidearm you would see on Star Trek: The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine. The Diamond Select Klingon Disruptor has 3 settings which are controlled by a switch just above the trigger. When I reviewed the last Disruptor I made a corresponding video to go with the review and I joked about the settings referring to them as were maim, kill and disintegrate. The settings on the Disruptor are actually single shot, multi-shot and disintegrate. Each time the Disruptor is fired the tip on the beam emitter lights up and goes along with the sound. The red light lights up very brightly and the sounds have good volume. The Disruptor takes 3 “AAA” batteries that are housed under a slide off section on the top of the gun.

I really liked the Diamond Select Klingon Disruptor. This is a perfect accessory for your Klingon costume not just because it is well construct and the perfect size, it also about 3 times less expensive than a fan produced prop replica. The only thing I didn’t like is the fact that the Klingon Disruptor is made for right handed people. The way the grip of the gun is designed there is a section just right to the trigger where you can rest your thumb. I tried switching hands but it just didn’t have the same feel. Since that was the only thing I didn’t like about this role play tech, I have to say I recommend for anyone who loves Star Trek.

There are some subtle differences between the general release and the exclusive versions aside from the barrel tip. The top part of the non-exclusive Disruptor has a small barrel that looks almost like a scope, whereas the exclusive has a lever on the side. The non-exclusive also has a slightly different color scheme with gold accents. Astatically I prefer the non-exclusive version because I feel that it would work in a holster better with the triangular barrel making for a faster draw. Other than that they are exactly the same. I know that if you are like me you will need both of them anyway…yes I said need.

The Klingon Disruptor is available at your local Comic or Specialty while the exclusive version can only be purchased from Action Figure Xpress. The Klingon Disruptor retails for around $49.99 but shop around since prices do vary from site to site. Get yours today. Qapla’!
