The season three opener of Defiance is heartbreaking. The town we have come to know has fallen on hard times. The gulanite mines are now inaccessible, the Earth Republic has pulled out and to top it off they are dealing with a hard winter. These things pale in comparison to the fact there is a Votanis Collective death squad heading for Defiance and they plan to burn it to the ground.
WARNING: SOME MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD
Season three doesn’t just bring heartbreak; it also brings us a new race, the Omec. These purple skinned aliens are the race that was left behind. The first two we meet are T’evgin, played by Conrad Coates, and his daughter Kindzi, played by Nichole Galicia. They come in search of gulanite to power their ship. When they get into the mine they find the remains of an ark and several occupied stasis pods. One of these pods houses Nolan (Grant Bowler) and Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) in cryo-sleep. The Omec notice that the pod is about to lose power so they free Nolan and Irisa. T’evgin and Kindzi then pull them from the mine and leave them in the snow topside. When Nolan and Irisa regain consciousness they head home to Defiance…
Meanwhile Rafe (Graham Greene), Stahma (Jaime Murray) and Datak (Tony Curran) are still following the trail of Pilar (Linda Hamilton) who kidnapped Alak (Jesse Rath) and Christie (Nicole Muñoz) last season. While on the trail Rafe, Stahma and Datak run across General Rahm Tak (Lee Tergesen) and his death squad. The three are promptly captured. Since the Votanis Collective has a hatred of humans, Datak and Stahma claim that Rafe is a wanted man and they are attempting to collect the bounty back in Defiance.
I don’t want to ruin the entire season premiere for you so I will avoid any further spoilers. Let’s just say if the events of the this episode set the tone for what is to come this season I am going to have to watch each week with a box of tissues. I will say that I do like the Omec. After watching the episode the first time, purple has become my favorite color. There is something sexy about a purple skinned woman with white hair, sharp teeth and a kick ass attitude.
I can’t wait to see what is in store for the town of Defiance and its inhabitants. I have enjoyed Defiance from the first episode and the show only seems to be getting better. Since season 3 looks as though Defiance is going into a new direction I hope this direction can carry the show to the next season and beyond. I can’t wait to see what is in store for the town of Defiance and its inhabitants. Defiance also stars Trenna Keating and Julie Benz. Defiance airs Friday nights at 9 only on Syfy followed by the new show, Dark Matter.
