Lakeshore Records is set to release Monsieur Spade—Original Series Soundtrack with music by Grammy and two-time Emmy-winning composer and educator Carlos Rafael Rivera (The Queen’s Gambit, Hacks), digitally today, January 19. Rivera utilizes trumpet, guitar, strings and flute to effortlessly conjure a classic Hollywood noire vibe that envelopes the legendary character of Sam Spade played in the series by Clive Owen. Created by Scott Frank and Tom Fontana, the creators of The Queen’s Gambit and Oz, the Black Bear produced series also starring Cara Bossom and Denis Menochet is airing now on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn TV.
Monsieur Spade centers around the infamous protagonist of American writer Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 classic novel The Maltese Falcon. The year is 1963, and the legendary Detective Sam Spade (Owen) is enjoying his retirement in the South of France. By contrast to his days as a private eye in San Francisco, Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet. But the rumored return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered at the local convent. As the town grieves, secrets emerge, and new leads are established. Spade learns that the murders are somehow connected to a mysterious child who is believed to possess great powers.
“The trumpet and alto flute imbued soundtrack harks back to the old Hollywood era of noire scoring, where jazz-inflected, atmospheric themes were richly developed around a central character. And through Scott Frank’s deft narrative, our story about the detective who happens to be at the wrong place at the right time develops and unfolds through dark, brooding tones, dissonant harmonies, and a sense of tension and mystery that only the noire genre can tap as effectively into.”
