Fantasticon has once again landed in Toledo
for another weekend of geeky fun. This show, which bills itself as a “mid-sized” show is a perfect convention for first timers and families. Having attended some of the “big” shows such as New York Comic Con I like Fantasticon because it isn’t sensory overload. It is a very relaxed atmosphere and the celebrity guests are usually very accessible and very friendly.
The celebrity guests included Gina Lee Nolin (Baywatch), Butch Patrick (The Munsters), Steven Williams (The X-Files), Seth Gilliam (Starship Troopers), Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) and Brian Posehn (The Big Bang Theory). Also, in attendance a small army of comic creators and writers, including the charismatic Dirk Manning and prolific author Jim Beard.
The hall was filled with multiple dealers selling comics, toys and assorted collectibles. Some of the other booths to visit were the 501st Legion, the Jurassic Rentals, the Klingon Assault Group and the Lost in Space Builders Club. At the Lost in Space booth, I had a great conversation with Richard Smith about how he is building a 1:1 scale B-9 robot by 3D printing the parts. He threw out so much technical data regarding the build that fascinated me as much as the data confused me. I told him that my partner in crime was the scientist, I was the writer and most of what he was saying was going over my head. He seemed very passionate about his project and if I had that much talent, I would be as well. His robot was still a work in progress (see photos) but still very cool.
