The season three opener of Defiance is heartbreaking. The town 
we have come to know has fallen on hard times. The gulanite mines are now inaccessible, the Earth Republic has pulled out and to top it off they are dealing with a hard winter. These things pale in comparison to the fact there is a Votanis Collective death squad heading for Defiance and they plan to burn it to the ground.
